Most people use boston.craigslist.org.
Boston is an area full of universities, and thus full of students: there are plenty of student housing options available. These options range from cheaper ($450/month for a single room in a shared apartment) to very expensive (the sky's the damn limit).
Many student-oriented housing options run 12-month leases from September to August. This means that if you are starting not in September, your have fewer options.
Public transport is excellent, so it is highly preferably to live close to the subway or at least a bus stop. Use www.walkscore.com to cross-check your candidate locations.
Since you give no indication of which school you are attending, and how much financial resource you have, I'm not sure what else to tell you ... except that you should start looking VERY SOON.
Also, for some of the options you may find that they want you to make a cash deposit (typically 1 month's rent) when you sign the contract. So start looking VERY SOON so that you can take care of these issues in time.
