PhD scholarships at DTU Nanotech, Spring 2011

A number of PhD scholarships are available at the Department of Micro- and Nanotechnology, DTU Nanotech, starting in the summer/fall of 2011. The subject of the PhD project must be within one of the main research areas of the department:

Cleanroom based micro- and nanofabrication
Polymer micro- and nanoengineering
Synthesis and self assembly of nanostructures
Lab-on-a-chip technology
Diagnostics and drug delivery
Miniaturised sensor and energy technology
Nanobiotechnology
Theory of micro- and nanosystems

Qualifications

Candidates should have (or soon obtain) a master's degree in engineering or a similar degree with an equivalent academic level. Candidates may apply prior to obtaining their master's degree, but cannot begin the PhD education before having received the grade.

To apply for these scholarships candidates must have an agreement with a supervisor at DTU Nanotech about a specified project. Therefore, for a candidate to be considered for the scholarships, endorsement and project description must be enclosed. See under "Application".

Approval and Enrolment

The scholarships are subject to academic approval and the candidates will be enrolled in one of the PhD programmes at DTU. For information about the general requirements for enrolment and the general planning of the scholarship studies, please see the DTU PhD Guide.

Salary and appointment terms

The salary and appointment terms are consistent with the current rules for PhD students at DTU. The period of employment is 3 years.

Postdoc Position in Molecular Microbiology at AAFC Canada
On  behalf of the  Government of Canada, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada  (AAFC)  undertakes research to achieve security of the food system,  health of  the environment and innovation for growth. Within this broad  mandate,  an important objective is to assess and to manage the risk to   environmental quality and public health from agricultural contaminants   that may be problematic for environmental or human health.

The  successful candidate will conduct research on the fate and  effects of  veterinary and human pharmaceuticals entrained onto  agricultural land  through the application of animal or human wastes.  Relevant areas of  focus could include 1. Characterize the impacts of  antimicrobial agents  on soil and crop microbial communities including  functional and  community structure endpoints, abundance and  characteristics of  antibiotic resistant bacteria. 2. Characterize the  pathways and  mechanisms of biodegradation of selected antibiotics and  other  pharmaceuticals in environmental matrices.

 
Candidates  should have a strong research record in microbiology,  biochemistry or  chemistry relevant to contaminant fate and impact  research. Experience  in molecular microbiology methods is highly  desirable.

Eurocancer  Stemcell Training is a network gathering 9 laboratories of 6 member  states at the highest level of cancer stem cell research. EuroCSC  training offers the opportunity to young researchers to join an  excellent training platform in this new area of Cancer Research.
An  Early Stage Researcher fellowship position is available for a period of  three years, tenable at Oxford University on a project entitled  "Cellular origin and molecular determinants of leukemic stem cells". The  position will be based in the laboratory of Professor Sten Eirik  Jacobsen and funded by the European Union Research Framework  Programme/Marie Curie Actions. This is part of an International Training  Network whose central theme is called 'Eurocancer Stemcell Training'.
DescriptionThis  project will use mouse models to establish the cellular and molecular  basis of collaboration between different classes of mutations in  preleukemic and leukemic stem cells. Mutations will be targeted to  different stages of hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells in mouse  models, to investigate how different primary target cell populations  impact on the cellular and molecular properties, as well as therapeutic  responsiveness of leukemic stem cells.
The Fellow will work in the  excellent research environment of the Weatherall Institute of Molecular  Medicine http://www.imm.ox.ac.uk/ at Oxford. The Jacobsen lab  http://www.imm.ox.ac.uk/wimm-research/haematopoietic-stem-cell-biology/sten-eirik-waelgaard-jacobsen  comprises approximately 15 members, who study the cellular and  molecular mechanisms that regulate normal white blood cell  differentiation from hematopoietic stem cells, and their dysregulation  in hematological malignancies.

The Queensland Brain  Institute (QBI) was established as a research institute  of the  University of Queensland in 2003. The Institute is now operating  out of  a new state-of-the-art facility and houses 28  Principal Investigators  with strong international reputations. OPPORTUNITY:
Become  a research higher degree student (PhD, Masters) or  occupational trainee  (research project towards a degree) at the QBI and  be part of the  start-up phase of an exciting new second-generation  sequencing research  centre that embarks on trailblazing research  projects identifying the  genetic and epigenetic mechanisms of brain  function and brain related  diseases. You will be able to take ownership  of research projects taking  your results to publication and be part of  an efficient team to develop  tools for different sequencing  applications (exom capture, RNA-seq,  CHiP-seq).
 
REQUIREMENTS:
1. Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Information technology or related field.
2. Experience with Bioinformatics/Next-gen tools and languages e.g.  Read aligner, GATK, GALAXY, UCSC Genome Browser, Ensemble database

PhD student in Production Engineering, M-2011-0131The School of Industrial Engineering and Management at the Royal Institute of Technology seeks a PhD student.

KTH is the largest technical university in Sweden. Education and research cover a broad spectrum within natural sciences and engineering, as well as architecture, industrial engineering and management, urban planning, work science and environmental engineering. KTH has 13 344 full-time equivalent students, of whom 6 955 are at Bachelor (first) level, while 5 545 are at Master (second) level. In addition, 1 314 are full-time equivalent students at doctoral studies (third) level and 3 900 employees.

Activities at School Industrial Engineering and Management cover the engineering, technological and economic knowledge necessary to be able to develop new products, material and production processes in a sustainable fashion as concerns technical management, financial profitability and the  environment. One precondition for innovation and enterprise is the study and application of basic physical and chemical phenomena as well as the integration of new, often multidisciplinary technologies, methods and tools. Core knowledge areas include energy technology, industrial design and innovation, product and production development, materials development, micro and nano technology as well as industrial economics, organization and management.

The department of Production Engineering is engaged in research on manufacturing processes and systems. The division of Machine and Process Technology is driving research in process machine interaction including influence of materials on tool life, process monitoring and control, vibration analysis and control in machining systems, machine tool design and development etc. 

Description of the research area
In order to strengthen its team for future research activities two PhD positions are now available at the division in the area of adaptive machine tools and machining processes. This research will address the challenges in design and development of adaptive machine tools with focus on dynamic properties and modular design. Objective of the research project is to develop modular machine tools with self-adaptive structural dynamic characteristics for improving productivity and flexibility in machining systems.

Qualifications/eligibility
The candidate shall have M.Sc./Master's degree in Mechanical engineering with a specialization in mechatronics, production or similar. Experience in vibration analysis, machine design, modeling and simulation will be an advantage. The candidate should be highly motivated for research studies and capable of working independently. Excellent communication, team working and critical analysis abilities are very important  for the job.

This appointment includes other department services in the form of assistance in teaching and labs for undergraduate and post graduate students with up to maximum 20% of the work time.
