http://www.myscience.ch/jobs/id29193

Applications are invited by the Communication and Distributed Systems research group at the University of Bern, Switzerland for two PhD student positions with competitive salaries, according to SNF regulations: one in the area of LOCALIZATION OF WIRELESS DEVICES and one in the broader area of COMMUNICATION AND DISTRIBUTED SYSTEMS.

The Communication and Distributed Systems group performs high quality research with publications in top venues in the areas of Mobile Communication, Networking and Multimedia, as well as Security. The University of Bern boasts a high standard of education (always in the top 200 world universities in major rankings), as well as stunning views of the Alps. It is situated in the center of the Swiss capital. The city of Bern is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is consistently ranked in the top ten worldwide for quality of life.

*Topics and tasks:*
The focus of the two positions will be, respectively, on:
-- Localization of wireless devices using software-defined radio systems
-- The broader area of communication and distributed systems, e.g. mobile/wireless communication, Software Defined Networking (SDN), Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) etc

The ideal candidates will have good knowledge and experience in one of these two areas. Moreover, they will have the opportunity to develop an expertise in diverse areas like algorithm design, data mining, mathematical modelling and analysis etc. Some additional background on the research topics can be found in the following references:
-- "TDOA for Narrow-band Signal with Low Sampling Rate and Imperfect Synchronization" by Z. Li, D. Dimitrova, D. Raluy and T. Braun, in Proceedings of IFIP WMNC 2014.
-- "A Time-based Passive Source Localization System for Narrow-band Signal" by Z. Li, T. Braun, D. Dimitrova, in Proceedings of IEEE ICC 2015.
-- "Critical Issues of Centralized and Cloudified LTE FDD Radio Access Networks" by  I. Alyafawi, E. Schiller, T. Braun, D. Dimitrova, A. Gomes, N. Nikaein, in Proceedings of IEEE ICC 2015

In addition, the selected candidate(s) will contribute to teaching, such as co-supervising Bachelor and Master theses and teaching assistant activities in Bachelor and Master courses, for which excellent capabilities in understanding and speaking of English and/or German language are mandatory.

*Requirements: *
We are looking for candidates who are highly motivated to conduct quality research, publish in top venues, and pursue a doctoral degree. Candidates should have:
-- a Master Degree in Computer Science or Electrical Engineering from a highly ranked university, preferably with focus on networking or communications,
-- excellent programming knowledge in C/C++ and Java,
-- very good knowledge with operating systems, in particular Linux,
-- strong experience with network simulators,
-- good analytical skills and research experience in one of the areas mentioned above.

Complete applications including a one-page cover letter (including descriptions of how the requirements above are fulfilled), CV, certificates and transcripts from Bachelor and Master studies, publications (Master thesis and papers), and contact details of at least two referees who are willing to provide detailed recommendations of the candidate can be sent in a *single PDF file* to:
