The Institute for Spatial and Landscape Development is looking for a
PhD student (100%) in integrated land-use and transport modelling
The PhD student will be part of the interdisciplinary project CHECNET funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation, which focuses on coupling land-use and transport interaction networks with ecological habitat networks for sustainable landscape and transportation planning. The student will further develop the existing land-use and transport interaction model FaLC to include changes in residential, workplace and commute choices resulting from biodiversity conservation measures (e.g. protected areas, reduced recreation pressure, reduction of urban sprawl, traffic calming, closing roads during certain hours of the day). Trade-offs between biodiversity conservation measures and land-use and transportation choices will be determined from a stated choice survey among the inhabitants of the Swiss Plateau. The survey will be performed by researchers from the Transport Planning Group. Together with ecologists, the PhD student will then analyse what influence biodiversity conservation measures may have on land-use and transport and vice versa. The PhD student will be based at the Planning of Landscape and Urban Systems Group (Prof. Adrienne Grêt-Regamey, Dr. Maarten van Strien) and be co-supervised by Prof. Kay Axhausen (Transport Planning Group).
We are seeking a highly motivated applicant with a Master in landscape or transport planning, environmental sciences, geography, economics, or related discipline. The ideal candidate has experience with land-use modelling, GIS and/or choice modelling. The applicant should be proficient in one or several programming languages (e.g. Python, C++, Matlab, R). Furthermore, the applicant should have a good command of English (both written and spoken) and should be willing to communicate with and work in an interdisciplinary Team, German is an asset. Familiarity with transport models would be advantageous, but is not essential.
For further information please contact Dr. Maarten van Strien by e-mail vanstrien@ethz.ch (no applications) and visit our websites www.irl.ethz.ch/plus.

Applications with cover letter, CV, testimonials and names and contacts of two referees should be sent online (use blue "Apply now" button below) till 2 September 2015 with attention to: ETH Zurich, Mrs. Corina Niescher, Human Resources, CH-8092 Zürich.
