From:   Søren Bech

*A Marie Skłodowska-Curie PhD Fellowship **in sensory analysis of
perceived quality of spatially dynamic sound fields***

A fully-funded three-year PhD research position is available at Bang &
Olufsen a/s and Dept. of Electronic Systems, Aalborg University under
the supervision of Prof. Søren Bech and Dr. Neo Kaplanis. The PhD
position is part of the H2020 MSCA European Training Network
"Service-Oriented Ubiquitous Network-Driven Sound (SOUNDS)" where the
PhD student will receive transdisciplinary and international
training. The topic of the PhD project is: "Quantification of perceived
quality of sound fields with dynamic relations between listener
positions and audio objects" and spans across the transdisciplinary
fields of psychoacoustics, sensory analysis, and signal processing.

*The "SOUNDS" project*

The SOUNDS European Training Network (ETN) revolves around a new and
promising paradigm coined as Service- Oriented, Ubiquitous,
Network-Driven Sound. Inspired by the ubiquity of mobile and wearable
devices capable of capturing, processing, and reproducing sound, the
SOUNDS ETN aims to bring audio technology to a new level by exploiting
network-enabled cooperation between devices. We envision the next
generation of audio devices to be capable of providing enhanced hearing
assistance, creating immersive audio experience, enabling advanced voice
control and much more, by seamlessly exchanging signals and parameter
settings, and spatially analyzing and reproducing sound jointly with
other nearby audio devices and infrastructure.

*Job Description*

The introduction of object-based audio formats, such as MPEG-H (see
ITU-R BS.2088-01, ITU-R BS.2051-2, ITU-R BS.2076-2) allows for complex
and dynamic sound scenes to be rendered in domestic and public
environments. The perceptual experience evoked by the reproduced sound
fields is critical in developing and improving the quality of spatial
audio to human listeners. This requires experimental procedures for
quantification of the perceived sound quality (SQ) and the Quality of
Experience (QoE) to human listeners. The objective for the PhD project
is to develop experimental paradigms for quantification of SQ or QoE of
such dynamic and complex sound fields. The successful candidate is also
expected to implement and use the relevant audio rendering and signal
processing technologies and conduct perceptual experiments.

As part of SOUNDS consortium, the PhD student will be funded by the
European Commission, ETN program, supporting the researcher for a period
of 3-years in the frame of a doctoral (PhD) program at Aalborg
University (Denmark). The PhD student will be one of 15 PhD students
employed by the partners (4 universities and 5 industrial partners) in
SOUNDS. The main part of this research program will be carried out at
Bang & Olufsen's Innovation labs in Struer, Denmark, supervised by
Prof. Søren Bech and Dr. Neo Kaplanis. As a part of the training
network, the researcher is expected to spend 5-months secondments in two
collaborating institution, at: (a) Carl von Ossietzky Universität
Oldenburg (Germany), co-supervised by Prof. Steven van de Par, and (b)
Aalborg University (Denmark), co-supervised by Prof. Jan Østergaard.

 *The ideal profile*

Candidates must

·     hold a master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Acoustics/Audio
engineering, Human Interaction, Psychology, Cognitive Sciences, or
closely related disciplines,

·     have taken specialized courses in at least one of the following
disciplines: acoustics, human perception, statistics, psychology, audio
signal processing, or machine learning,

·     have excellent proficiency in the English language, as well as
good communication skills, both oral and written.

·     satisfy the eligibility conditions for MSCA Early Stage
Researchers, i.e., they must have obtained their Master degree in the
past 4 years and must not have resided or carried out their main
activity (work, studies, etc.) in Denmark for more than 12 months in the
past 3 years.

·     Technical expertise in spatial audio schemes, including sound
design, experimental protocols, and production is welcome.

Candidates who are in the final phase of their Master's program are
encouraged to apply, clearly mentioning their expected graduation date
in the application.
