The Communication and Distributed Systems research group at the University of Bern, Switzerland, invites applications for two PhD student positions in projects funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) on technologies and concepts for the Future Internet and localization of wireless devices. We offer competitive Ph.D. student salaries according to SNSF regulations.
The Communication and Distributed Systems group performs high quality research with publications in top venues in the areas of mobile communications, multimedia networking, and security. The University of Bern maintains a high standard of education (always in the top 200 world universities in major university rankings). The university is situated in the city centre of Bern, which is the capital of Switzerland. The city of Bern is a UNESCO world heritage site with stunning views to the Alps and is consistently ranked in the top ten worldwide for quality of life.
*Topics and tasks:*
The focus of the two positions will be on:
-- Future Internet technologies such as information-centric networking and network coding
-- Localization of wireless devices using software-defined radio systems
The ideal candidates have good knowledge and experience in one of these two areas. The candidates will have the opportunity to develop expertise in diverse areas such as algorithm design, data mining, mathematical modelling and analysis. Some additional background on the research topics can be found in the following references:
-- Zan Li, Desislava Dimitrova, David Raluy, Torsten Braun: TDOA for narrow-band signal with low sampling rate and imperfect synchronization, 7th IFIP Wireless and Mobile Networking Conference, 20-22 May, 2014
-- Marie-Jose Montpetit, Cedric Westphal, Dirk Trossen: Network coding meets information-centric networking: an architectural case for information dispersion through native network coding, 1st ACM workshop on Emerging Name-Oriented Networking, 2012
The selected candidates will contribute to teaching, such as co-supervising Bachelor and Master theses and teaching assistant activities in Bachelor and Master courses, for which excellent capabilities in understanding and speaking of English and/or German language are mandatory.
*Requirements:*
We are looking for candidates, who are highly motivated to conduct quality research, to publish in top venues, and to pursue a doctoral degree. Candidates should have:
-- a Master Degree in Computer Science or Electrical Engineering from a highly ranked university, preferably with focus on networking or communications,
-- excellent programming knowledge in C/C++ and Java,
-- very good knowledge with operating systems, in particular Linux,
-- strong experience with network simulators,
-- good analytical skills and research experience in one of the areas mentioned above.
Complete applications including a one-page cover letter (including descriptions of how the requirements above are fulfilled), CV, certificates and transcripts from Bachelor and Master studies, publications (Master thesis and papers), and contact details of at least two referees, who are willing to provide detailed recommendations of the candidate, can be sent in a single PDF file to
