PhD Position Available in Remote Sensing of Vegetation Physiology and Function (Hyperspectral Remote Sensing)
University, Department, Labs: Forest & Wildlife Ecology, University of Wisconsin-Madison

The University of Wisconsin-Madison is one of the major research universities in the United States (www.wisc.edu). It ranks 2nd in research expenditures among all U.S. universities and first among public universities. Total student enrollment is 41,500, out of which 8,800 are graduate students. Employees include 2,000 faculty. UW-Madison has a long history of excellence in ecology, conservation biology, and wildlife biology. The Townsend Lab maintains state-of-the-art facilities for remote sensing research, including computation power, as well as a broad range of field spectrometers, calibration equipment, and ecosystem measurement instrumentation.

Town:
Madison, Wisconsin consistently ranks as one of the best places in the United States to live, work, and study. It is Wisconsin's capital city, with a vibrant metropolitan population of approximately 400,000 that combines small town charm with a nice variety of leisure and cultural opportunities. For more information on campus and town see: http://www.wisc.edu/about/location.php

- Names and contact addresses of three references

Questions (but not your application) should be directed to Dr.Townsend (ptownsend@wisc.edu).

The Townsend Lab (http://labs.russell.wisc.edu/townsend/phil-townsend/) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison is seeking two Ph.D. students interested in understanding spatial patterns of vegetation function in forested and agricultural landscapes. We make use of a range of remote sensing tools to measure plant traits, such as their chemistry and physiology, and to understand the drivers of how plant traits vary spatially and how this variability influences growth and productivity. In particular, we make extensive use of field measurements of leaf and canopy reflectance using spectrometers, and link such data to remote sensing imagery, especially hyperspectral data. The research has potential application in a range of areas, including forest ecology, forestry, agronomy and other areas in ecology and environmental science. Students interested in the interaction of genetics with plant physiology and ecosystem ecology are especially encouraged to apply, as we will be looking at how plant chemical and physiological traits differ with genetic differences.

Prospective students should have:

  • a master's degree in biology, ecology, geography or related environmental sciences (BS only with equivalent demonstrated experience),
  • experience in remote sensing, either through courses or work, and
  • solid working knowledge of statistics and/or a programming background

Students with backgrounds in physics, optics, computer science or modeling and an interest in ecological applications are also encouraged to apply.

Applicants must have excellent English writing and verbal communication skills, as well as the ability to work and lead a research team, are essential.

Interests of the students can focus on different areas:

  • We are interested in ecological variation in plant traits between and within species in the forests of the Upper Midwest -We are also interested in understanding how phenotypic variation in a range of agricultural and grassland systems is related to genetics and environment, and what these mean for yields and productivity.
  • We are also interested in finding students motivated to develop and test new forms of instrumentation to measure ecosystem properties, ranging from handheld instrumentation to remote platforms.

NOTES:
Additional Salary Information:

tuition (minus segregated fees covered) and health insturance
