Funded Studentship: International Migration, Translocal Property Relations and the Politics of Justice

(2 positions)

University of East Anglia -Law & Anthropology

School of International Development
Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology

Deadline: 21 March 2014.
Supervisory Team: Professor Thomas Sikor, t.sikor@uea.ac.uk. Dr Bertram Turner, turner@eth.mpg.de.

The Project: The Department ‘Law & Anthropology’ of the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology and the School of International Development at the University of East Anglia advertise two 3-year PhD studentships on International Migration, Translocal Property Relations and the Politics of Justice. The studentship holders will develop the research as part of wider research collaboration between the two institutions led by Dr Bertram Turner and Prof Thomas Sikor. We invite original research proposals examining specific experiences with international migration from the Global South to the European Union and their effects on rural property dynamics and the politics of justice in the Global South. The research projects are expected to take the form of multi-sited ethnographies, including a significant element of fieldwork-based data collection.

We invite interested candidates to propose specific projects fitting these themes. Illustrative examples of possible PhD topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Dynamics of property and politics of justice in a village receiving investment in agriculture or forestry from overseas migrants.
  • Translocal resistance to dispossession due to a hydropower project by directly affected villagers and their relatives in overseas diaspora communities.
  • The relations between local villagers and overseas activists within indigenous people’s mobilizations against extractive industry projects in the Global South.
  • Struggles over property and authority encountered in development projects financed or operated by migrant people’s NGOs.

Successful completion of the research will lead to the award of a PhD degree at the School of International Development. The scholarship holders will be expected to share their time between the two institutions.
