Dear all,

I'm advertising this PhD/post-doc position on behalf of a colleague, Dr. Betty Mohler.

Applicants are expected to have experience in EEG and vestibular research.

Please see the attached pdfs for more info.

Best regards,

Lewis

OPEN POSITION: PhD IN NEUROSCIENCE

Human electrophysiology, Virtual reality, Self-consciousness,

Perspective taking, Multisensory processing, Cognition

A PhD position in Neuroscience is available. The PhD applicant will be cosupervised

by Dr. Christophe Lopez (Laboratory of Integrative and

Adaptative Neurocience at the French National Centre for Scientific

Research and Aix-Marseille University, Marseille, France) and Dr. Betty

Mohler (Space and Body Perception" research group at the Max Planck

Institute for Biological Cybernetics in Tübingen, Germany).

The position is part of the Volkswagen Foundation's "Finding Perspective"

project, which aims to examine several interactions between various forms of

perceptual perspective and bodily experience. The project is highly

interdisciplinary, with expertise spanning experimental psychology,

neurophysiology, philosophy of mind and computer science.

The aim of the position is to combine neurophysiological (EEG, EMG) and

computer science (virtual reality) methods to pursue general research

questions such as the following: How do posture and the vestibular system

affect your ability to take another's perspective? How might it feel to be

someone else, somewhere else? How does the brain process sensory signals

related to self-location and embodiment? The applicant will principally be

based in Dr. Lopez's lab in Marseille (http://lnia.fr), which investigates the

effects of vestibular stimulation and multisensory conflicts on various aspects

of bodily perception and awareness, and visuo-spatial cognition. Dr.

Mohler's "Space and Body Perception" research group is within an excellent

multidisciplinary, interactive and collaborative research environment

combining expertise in psychophysics, virtual reality and robotics (Prof.

Heinrich Bülthoff), as well as the Max Planck for Intelligent Systems, computer

vision, computer graphics, perception (Prof. Michael Black).

We are looking for suitable candidates with interest and knowledge in human

electroencephalography, electromyography, psychophysical methods, as well

as good programming and modeling skills (Matlab, Unity3D, 3DStudio Max).

Applicants for this position should have ideally a background in neuroscience,

psychology, cognitive sciences, computer science, or a related field.

The position is immediately available and is funded for a period of 3 years.

Payment is according to the guidelines of the French National Centre for

Scientific Research (CNRS) for the two first years of the PhD, and the Max

Planck Society for the third year of the PhD. The Max Planck Society is an

equal opportunity employer: Handicapped individuals are strongly encouraged

to apply, and so are women in areas in which they are underrepresented.

Applications should include a letter of motivation, a curriculum vitae,

Master certificates (including a list of classes taken during Bachelor and

Master studies), letters of references and a short summary of past

research experience. Applications should be submitted in a single PDF

document to the email addresses below. All information or questions

regarding the position should be submitted electronically to Dr. Lopez

(christophe.lopez@univ-amu.fr) and Dr. Mohler (Betty.mohler@tuebingen.mpg.de)

with the subject line "PhD Position 1: VW Project".

For general inquiries concerning the Volkswagen Foundation's "Finding

Perspective project", please contact Dr. Adrian Alsmith (asmith@hum.ku.dk).
