Within the collaborative FP7 project Eurowestnile (www.eurowestnile.org), the student will conduct ecological, entomological and molecular analysis on vector mosquitoes and host species involved in WNV transmission in Italy. Collection of entomological and ecological data will be carried out in northern Italy within areas of reported WNV outbreak during the period 2008-2010.
The aim of the research is to gain insight into vector ecology and feeding preferences that, along with molecular and phylogenetic analysis on the viral isolates, will provide estimates for parameters critical for the development of predictive models. The student will have the opportunity to spend at least 6 months in an external laboratory and participate to the Eurowestnile project PhD initiatives
The student will have the following tasks:
i) establish a common sampling protocol of entomological, zoological and ecological data from at least 15 sites across northern Italy with other partner of the consortium;
ii) organize and carry out in cooperation with other national partners the collection of the mosquitoes and of the zoological and ecological data;
iii) organize all the activities related to sampling, storage and delivery to the partner laboratories;
iv) cooperate in molecular analysis, data generation, collection and analysis using appropriate statistical techniques;
v) present the results at at least one scientific conference;
vi) prepare at least 3 scientific articles for IF peer-review journals

The Fellowship is for three years (36 months) with a possible extension of one year. Requirement for the grant is the admission to a PhD school individuated by Fondazione Edmun Mach (FEM) within the first year of the fellowship. Reasonable registration costs for the PhD course will be covered by FEM
English EU Level B1 or higher
Master degree (5 years) in Biology, Natural Sciences, Environmental Science, Biotechnology, Veterinary Medicine or equivalent
