PhD Student (Department of Biology)
The project "Mapping Amazonian biodiversity at multiple scales by integrating geology and ecology" seeks a PhD student for a fixed term employment until the end of 2017 at the University of Turku. The project is funded by the Academy of Finland in the context of a joint biodiversity program with FAPESP of the São Paulo State in Brazil, and is carried out as a collaborative project between University of Turku and the Brazilian National Institute for Space Research.
The overall aim of the project is to increase understanding of the broad-scale biodiversity patterns in Amazonian rain forests by combining information on floristic and edaphic heterogeneity as inferred from indicator species, soil data and remote sensing, and reconstructions of the geological history and landscape evolution in Amazonia. The PhD student is expected to actively pursue research related to these topics.
The successful applicant should have a MSc degree in a relevant field of science and should show high motivation, enthusiasm for science and ability to work both independently and as a member of an international research team. Earlier experience with similar research topics is an asset. Depending on the interests of the successful candidate, the position may include field work in Brazilian Amazonia.
The salary of the PhD student will be based on job demands level 2 of the university salary chart for teachers and researchers. The task-specific basic salary component is 1944.69 euros per month and the additional component determined by personal performance is at most 46.3 % of the basic salary.
The position has a probation period of four months.
