PhD Studentships
Cyber Security & Software Engineering
Birmingham City University -Faculty of Technology, Engineering and the Environment
Required to start: September 2014
As part of our ongoing investment in research, the University's Faculty of Technology, Engineering and the Environment is pleased to announce the availability of a range of partially and fully funded PhD research studentships in the centres of Cyber Security and Software Engineering to start in September 2014. We welcome applications from UK, EU and Overseas students.
The centres have leading expertise in a number of research areas including digital identity & access management; threat modelling; development of tools for monitoring, detecting and mitigating insider and external cyber threats; engineering secure services from components; building in security, privacy and resilience by design; methodologies and tools for security assurance and testing; security of shared information and cloud provisions. Our research also aims at innovative solutions supporting major multi-disciplinary technological and societal challenges such as smart cities, health and financial services.
The main emphasis is on demonstrable technological innovations underpinned by appropriate theoretical frameworks, architectural models, and assurance methods.
The Awards: A full studentship covers the cost of tuition fees at the UK/EU rate or, in exceptional circumstances, the overseas rate; and a stipend. In the 2014/2015 academic year, the stipend is £13,863. A partial studentship only covers the cost of tuition fees. The studentship is available to support three years' full-time study, subject to satisfactory progress. The centres are also keen to attract suitably qualified candidates for self-funded PhD positions. The current fees for home/EU students and non-EU students are shown on our website (see link below).
Requirements: We will consider applications from candidates with an undergraduate degree (1st or 2:1) or masters level (merit/distinction) in computer science or closely-related disciplines. Mature students with extensive industrial experience in the outlined areas could also be considered. Relevant management skills, programming expertise and software development experience are highly desirable. Good written and verbal communication skills are essential.
Criteria: Studentships will be awarded based on academic excellence, alignment of expertise with the outlined research interests, and potential for future achievement. You are encouraged to informally contact individual staff to propose a new project or to discuss specific topics outlined on this web page. http://www.bcu.ac.uk/tee/research/centre-for-cyber-security
Closing date for applications: 5 May 2014.
Interviews for shortlisted candidates to be held: 12-16 May 2014.
