The Department of Forest Sciences at the University of Helsinki conducts internationally renowned research in forest sciences and provides highest level education based on the research. The aim of the department's multidisciplinary activities is to promote the ecologically, economically and socially sustainable use of forests and peatlands. The Department of Forest Sciences is one of the four departments at the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry, located on the Viikki Campus.
Department of Forest Sciences invites applications for the position of
DOCTORAL STUDENT
The student will work in the field of natural forest dynamics, in a collaborative project involving several research groups from Finland, Canada and Japan. The project investigates spatiotemporal patterns of change in boreal forest landscapes during the past 50 years, employing a combination of repeat aerial photography, field measurements and tree-rings. The main duties of the doctoral student include postgraduate studies, and research aiming for doctoral dissertation.
A successful candidate will hold a M.Sc. degree in forest sciences, landscape ecology, biologically-oriented physical geography, or other related field, and have a good command of the English language. The candidate should be willing to travel, and able to work efficiently in the field. Although not required, we consider experience in working with remote sensing imagery, spatial or geostatistical analysis methods, tree rings, and scripting in R (or other computing environments) as advantages.
The salary for the position is in accordance with the Finnish university salary system (for teaching and research personnel) level 2. In addition, there is a share increase based on the personal performance. The starting salary will be approximately 2000-2300 €/month. The initial contract is for one year (with a four-month trial period), subject to renewal annually to up to three years. Starting date is March 1 2015, or as agreed.
