About Simula Simula Research Laboratory AS is a publicly owned research institute located outside Oslo, Norway. It is a multi-cultural organization, employing about 140 individuals from 25 countries. Simula is conducting ICT research in the fields of communication technology, scientific computing and software engineering. Simula's main objective is to generate new understanding and create vital knowledge about fundamental scientific challenges that are of genuine value for society. This is achieved through high quality research, education of graduate students, industry collaboration, technology transfer and commercialisation. Project Description Centre for Resilient Networks and Applications (CRNA) at Simula focuses on robustness and security of ICT infrastructures. This implies research on networks and applications with the aim of making them resilient with respect to failures and changing environment. The Networks department works on resilience in communication networks and applications from a measurement perspective, through prototyping and through theoretical studies. We are looking for a PhD student to join our team for Theoretical and Data-driven Approaches for Energy-efficient Networks (TIDENET) project, funded by the Norwegian Research Council under FRINATEK. TIDENET will address the growing energy consumption issues of communication networks by studying and revisiting fundamental tradeoffs for energy efficiency in future communication networks. The selected candidate is expected to start working from 1st June 2015. The duration of the contract will be 3 years. The selected candidate will be enrolled as a PhD student at University of Oslo (he/she needs to apply to UIO after being selected). Responsibilities As a PhD student, you will work closely with your supervisor and the project leader on designated tasks for the position's duration. The tasks mainly include studying fundamental tradeoffs on energy efficiency in emerging data driven communication networks, analysis and modelling of real traffic data traces (based on their social and mobility behaviours) collected from mobile network operators, and testbed development for simulations, experimenting and evaluation of the practical limits of energy efficiency. Candidate Profile We are looking for applicants with - - A Master's degree in communication networks, computer science/engineering, information technology or similar/equivalent fields. (Preferably a research based Master's degree) -- In-depth knowledge of communication networks, in particular, wireless networks. - Good background on optimization, control, modelling and data analysis - Experience or research work on algorithm design and analysis - Experience with testbed building is an advantage - Publications on peer reviewed international conferences/journals will be considered in the evaluation Simula Offers Excellent working environment with highly competent and motivated Researchers.
