[beasiswa] [info] Research Assistant / PhD Candidate in Data Analysis for Cognitive Computing in Design

The Chair of Information Architecture has a future opening in the area of Data Analysis for Cognitive Computing in Design for a
Research Assistant / PhD Candidate
In our research group we develop methods for integrating advanced data analytics into the urban design and planning process. In order to make data analytics available to design, the main task evolves from collecting data to extract¬ing information and knowledge from it as well as to retrieve and use this knowledge again. We investigate correlations between spatial configurations and behavioral phenomena or personal experiences, and we look for intrinsic effects that spatial configurations can have for their future usage and function.

Your Tasks:  You work on aspects of data analysis and information retrieval for urban planning purposes in the context of a new planning framework, which is developed at ETH Zurich and at the Future Cities Laboratory in Singapore. You develop concepts and models to support the planning process by data informed computational methods and implement prototypes in collaboration with your colleges of the research groups. You use open data from various sources from around the word for existing cities and their inhabitants. Finally you explore the impact of new designs with the developed models.

Data-mining methods for all types of geo-referenced data, such as socioeconomic data of people, land use data, distributions of functions, people opinions and emotional responses, climate or pollution data can be developed to examine big data sets for regular behavioral patterns and coupling rules. You must be familiar with statistical methods for analyzing the collected data.

Your Profile: We are looking for a highly motivated candidate holding a degree in Architecture or Urban Planning (or with equivalent relevant background) and with strong skills in computer programming or statistics (ideally with a degree in computer science). You are detail-oriented and at the same time able to think at an abstract scientific level.

Experience in the field of urban planning is beneficial. Your English must be fluent, both written and spoken. German skills are welcome, but not mandatory.

Our offer: We offer a position in an international and highly interdisciplinary research group based at ETH Zurich, within the Department of Architecture at the Chair of Information Architecture and with a direct link to the Future Cities Laboratory of the Singapore-ETH Centre in Singapore. In this renowned, vibrant and highly innovative setting, you will work on solutions with the most innovative research groups in the field. ETH is an equal opportunity employer and offers a competitive salary. The position is initially limited to one year, with an option for extension, as well as pursuing a doctoral research thesis given the necessary qualifications. Workplace Zurich or Singapore will be determined during the application process.

For further information please contact Dr. Reinhard König (http://www.ia.arch.ethz.ch/koenig/), but don't send your application directly to Dr. König. Please also visit our websites: www.ia.arch.ethz.ch
