Vacancy No. 16/1/13 D

The Helmholtz Centre Potsdam GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences is the national Research Centre for Geosciences in Germany and a member of the Helmholtz Association. The Department 1 "Geodesy and Remote Sensing", Section 1.4 "Remote Sensing" invites applications for a

PhD Position (m/f) in the field of remote sensing

The successful candidate will work and contribute to our active interdisciplinary research field related to radar remote sensing and its application for geophysical and environmental studies. The PhD position will be involved in the sub-project entitled "Remote sensing-based process modeling and hazard assessment" within the Helmholtz Association (HGF)-funded project "HGF Alliance: Remote Sensing and Earth System Dynamics".
Tasks:
  • Use of multi-wavelength radar observations, in combination with corner reflectors and GPS measurements to detect deformation caused by hazardous processes, such as glacier movements, landslides, erosion and tectonic activity
  • Contribute InSAR methods for rapid assessment of damage immediately following natural disasters
  • Contribute to the development of advanced interferometry techniques, such as Persistent Scatterer (PS) and Small Baselines (SBAS) methods for routine and long-term monitoring of natural hazards
  • Contribute to the integration of radar data with optical sensors for surface deformation mapping
  • Conduct field work to obtain ground-truth observations for radar imagery
  • Prepare manuscripts to international scientific journal standard and make contribution to national and international conferences
Qualifications:
  • Master of Science in Geodesy, Remote Sensing, Geosciences, or related disciplines with a strong background in radar remote sensing
  • Experience with InSAR data processing and time-series analysis
  • Experience with Multiple-Aperture Interferometry (MAI) and intensity tracking techniques for deformation mapping
  • Experience with geophysical inversion and interpretation of surface deformation data
  • Knowledge in SAR Polarimtery data analysis
  • Fluency in spoken and written English is a prerequisite
