At the Department of Thematic Studies research, research training, graduate and undergraduate education is carried out in multi- and interdisciplinary units. A specific thematic programme defines the profile of the research and education of each environment as well as the corresponding study plan for PhD education. The Department gives priority to these programmes, where the doctoral students are organised in graduate schools within the framework of each thematic unit. Today, there are four thematic units at the Department: Child Studies, Gender Studies, Technology and Social Change Studies, and Water and Environmental Studies. Within the thematic units, scholars with backgrounds in social science, humanities, natural and technical sciences as well as with interdisciplinary fields collaborate. At the Department of Thematic Studies, there are two international Master's programmes, a graduate level programme, and engagement in undergraduate education within child studies, geography, environmental studies, gender studies and thematic natural science. The Department of Thematic Studies hosts six centres that undertake research and education: Centre for Climate Science and Policy Research, Centre of Gender Excellence, Nordic Research School in Interdisciplinary Gender Studies, Swedish-International Research School in Interdisciplinary Gender Studies, Centre for gender studies and equality, and Centre for Technology and Society at Linköping University.

The Department of Thematic Studies - Water and Environmental Studies (WES) is an interdisciplinary milieu within the Department of Thematic Studies, and includes about 60 employees of which a third is PhD-students. It is a centre for multi- and interdisciplinary research and education, where natural and cultural scientists collaborate in search for knowledge across the boundaries of traditional disciplines. The research covers a spectrum of environmental issues and questions in the borderland of nature-society and the relationship between water, landscape and man. It combines various perspectives, theories, techniques and methods from various disciplines and traditions including both contemporary as well as historical studies. WES is the administrative unit for the undergraduate programs Environmental Science (BSc program) and Science for Sustainable Development (MSc program) as well as for single subject courses within Geography, Environmental Science and Thematic Natural Science. In addition WES hosts a graduate education in Environmental Science. A major research laboratory is a fundamental platform of this department.
