PhD Studentship in SAR Remote Sensing of Sea Ice at the University of VictoriaPattern and process: Investigating the spatio-temporal evolution of summer Arctic sea ice using multi-frequency C- and L-band synthetic aperture radar Satellite SAR holds considerable promise for providing regional-scale sea ice melting state and ice type information during the summer melt period. The pending launch of polar orbiting SAR constellation missions will significantly enhance the revisit frequency over areas of interest and enhance process studies. This PhD project will be part of a collaborative and multidisciplinary research program focused on the characterization and remote sensing of sea ice melt-dynamics and ocean-ice-atmosphere interactions. The project aims to quantify and assess sea ice melt dynamics using surface and satellite based radar observations. The successful candidate will integrate surface and satellite based radar observations of sea ice and will perform a spatial analysis of evolving sea ice conditions during the seasonal melt period. Work includes field based experiments of C- and L-band frequency radar-ice interactions in the Canadian Arctic during summer ice melt period, as well as quantitative satellite SAR image analysis and possibly microwave scattering modelling. Candidates for this position must have a post-graduate (masters) degree in Physical Geography, Geomatics, or related Earth/Environmental Science field. Applications are invited from candidates with an interest in remote sensing, sea ice geophysics, and/or snow/ice hydrology. The candidate should be self-motivated, with excellent writing and communication skills. Additional required skills include:
Enquiries and applications including a letter of intent that describes your academic and career goals as well as research interests, a curriculum vitae, transcripts of all post-secondary institutions you have attended, a list of publications (if any), and full contact information for three professional referees who can provide reference letters should be e-mailed to: Dr. Randy Scharien at randy@uvic.ca Why UVic and why Victoria? As an internationally renowned research and teaching hub, UVic enables you to collaborate with great minds in sustainability, oceans, climate and much more. Victoria enjoys the mildest climate in Canada, combined with natural beauty, an active outdoor lifestyle, and economic opportunities. Ocean views, heritage architecture and charm make this city one of the most unique places in Canada. Discovery, creativity and innovation come naturally here. |
