We invite applications for a PhD student position in Health IT at Department of Information System, University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC). The ideal candidate should have   - MSc degree in computer science, biomedical informatics, health informatics or a related discipline.  - Programming experience (preferably Java).  - Expertise in some of the following topics namely, EMRs, healthcare IT standards, data mining, database, Semantic Web Technologies, machine learning, NLP, terminology/ontology development tools and environment.   - Knowledge or experience in clinical data modeling and phenotype extraction from EMRs will be an added advantage.  - Excellent oral and written communication skills.      Applications must include a short (1-2 page) statement of the applicant's motivation for applying for this position, including 1) the candidate's research interests, 2) relevant qualifications for the position, and 3) reasons for wanting to obtain a PhD. The applicant is encouraged to include a short personal statement as well. The application must also include a CV, degrees and grades (translated to English), a copy of Master thesis (or a draft thereof), publications, other relevant documents, and the earliest possible starting date.
