A PhD position is available within the Materials Theory Group, Materials Department, ETH Zürich (www.theory.mat.ethz.ch) under the supervision of Dr. Claude Ederer.
The corresponding research project aims at using the combination of density functional theory and dynamical mean-field theory (the "DFT+DMFT" method) to study metal-insulator transitions in complex transition metal oxides such as titanates, vanadates, and nickelates. The goal is to achieve a better understanding of such metal-insulator transitions and how they can be influenced by lattice strain, chemical composition, and applied external fields.
Ideally, we are looking for a person who combines the following three aspects:
1. A keen interest in the fascinating properties and materials-science-related aspects of functional transition metal oxides (interplay between magnetism, structural phase transitions, metal-insulator transitions, superconductivity, etc.).
2. Enthusiasm to engage in the theoretical/computational aspects required for an accurate treatment of interacting many-body systems.
3. Ability and motivation for programming and the development of scientific software.
In addition, a Master degree (or equivalent) in Physics/Materials Science/Chemistry or a closely-related area is required.
The Materials Theory Group offers a stimulating and supportive working environment, a large network of collaborators within Switzerland and abroad (both experimentalists and theoreticians), and provides the best possible conditions for a productive and successful PhD thesis. The starting date for this PhD position is flexible and can range from immediately to fall 2015.
