The Neutron Scattering and Magnetism Group within the Physics Department at ETH Zurich are currently looking for excellent
PhD students
for Universality at quantum critical points in spin systems and on experimental studies of quantum magnets using neutron scattering and bulk methods.
The successful candidates will perform fundamental research in the field of quantum magnetism. All stages of the project will be included: from sample synthesis and characterization to macroscopic measurements and diffraction, and culminating in inelastic neutron scattering experiments at facilities in Switzerland, France, the UK and USA. The beauty of quantum criticality is that in its vicinity materials exhibit universal properties, such as thermodynamics and correlation functions, that are totally independent of the details of the underlying Hamiltonian. This allows to quantitatively compare experimental results to rigorous quantum field theory calculations, with only a minimal knowledge of the actual materials under study. The aim of this project is to experimentally verify such universal laws in application to several prototype quantum magnetic materials. We also would like to understand how robust this universality is, and what are the limits of its validity.
The following qualifications are required:
A solid background in quantum mechanics, quantum statistical physics and quantum solid state physics.
Some experience in low‐temperature measurements and/or neutron scattering is beneficial but not prerequisite.
Proficiency in computer‐based data analysis (e.g. Matlab or equivalent) is essential.
Interpersonal and communication skills (a team‐player).
For further information contact Prof. Dr. Andrey Zheludev at zhelud@ethz.ch. Also see our group web page www.neutron.ethz.ch
To apply, please submit a complete application, consisting of a CV, all certificates, transcripts, a statement of research interests and the names and contact details of two referees and upload all documents (pdf is recommended) through the website. Any other way of applying will not be considered. Send the application to: ETH Zurich, Mr. Thomas Koenitzer, Human Resources, CH-8092 Zurich. Incomplete application packages will not be considered.
