[beasiswa] [info] EU-funded PhD position in machine learning for large-scale biogeochemistry analysis (Jena, Germany)

EU-funded PhD position in machine learning for large-scale biogeochemistry analysis in Jena, Germany The computer vision group of the Friedrich Schiller University of Jena, Germany, headed by Joachim Denzler, offers a PhD student position to outstanding students interested in machine learning. The position is part of the European project "BACI: Detecting changes in essential ecosystem and biodiversity properties – towards a Biosphere Atmosphere Change Index" together with the Max Plank Institute for Biogeochemistry and many more labs around Europe. The project has been evaluated recently with the highest score and is likely going to have a strong impact in the area of Biogeochemistry. Jena and the Computer Vision Group The city of Jena, located in the heart of Germany, is a traditional and lively University town and with its large percentage of students and researchers it is right to say: There is no University in Jena, Jena is the University. This makes Jena an ideal place for studying, researching, and living. Our group is a young and vibrant, international team, actively publishing at major computer vision conferences (CVPR, ECCV, ICCV). We are currently developing several parallel research lines including biomedical image analysis, image understanding, and life-long learning. For more details please visit http://www.inf-cv.uni-jena.de/en/research.html. In the project, we will be tackling demanding machine learning tasks that will help researchers to detect unusual events in the ecosystem. The group and the project is therefore an excellent starting point for a successful career in machine learning as well as research in big data analytics. Requirements We are looking for highly motivated and creative scientists with expertise in machine learning interested in both developing new algorithms as well as robust, usable systems for the analysis of large-scale data. The applicants shall have the desire and ability to work in an interdisciplinary team. The successful candidates for these positions will have: The creativity to develop new algorithms and learning paradigms. Practical knowledge of the current state-of-the-art in machine learning. The commitment and dedication to develop robust, working systems. Fluency in written and oral English. German is a plus. The flexibility to frequently travel to our international partners. Strong interest in analyzing remote sensing data Strong programming expertise in MATLAB and C, C++, or Python. What we offer The position (full employment, TV-L 13) will last two years and may be renewed, upon positive evaluation, with a possibility for an extension of up to three years. Applicants should email a CV and a cover letter summarizing their research experience, interests, and relations to the research areas of the Computer Vision Group Jena and the EU project. Please send your applications to: Erik Rodner Erik.Rodner@uni-jena.de Each application for a PhD position or internship shall refer to at least one of our current research projects, including a reasonable explanation why you want to work in this area. Without such a link, the application will be disregarded immediately without notice. In addition, each cover letter must contain the following sentence: „I am eager to work in machine learning" (at any place, included in the text in a reasonable manner).
