Description of function
Over several months beginning in late 1965, an anticommunist pogrom that marked the transition from the Sukarno to the Suharto presidencies led to the murder of about half a million people. Groups that identify with the perpetrators of these macro-crimes continue to dominate the Indonesian national memory of them. Public expressions of traumatic counter-memories among victim groups, meanwhile, remain suppressed, often by resorting to (the threat of) violence. This project in memory studies will investigate how memories of these events are reproduced from one generation to another, both among perpetrator and among victim groups, against the backdrop of official historiography. It will adopt a historical ethnography approach to the social regeneration of memories within settings such as the family, the school, the religious community, and the neighborhood.

Questions to be addressed might include the following: What generational processes determine the transmission of traumatic memories? How have mnemonic practices in relation to these memories varied as electronic and print media penetrated rural communities since 1965? How do official memories and hidden counter-memories interact within the relatively free spaces of reading and reaction away from public spaces? What techniques of contestation and resistance are being deployed by 'memory entrepreneurs' who challenge the existing memory regime with counter-memories? What role do lieux de mémoire play in different settings relating to these memories, and how are these meaningful places regenerated?
The research position (AIO) is funded by the Royal Netherlands Institute of Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies (KITLV), an institute of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW). The research will be embedded in a larger framework of cooperation between KITLV and the Leiden Institute of Area Studies (LIAS) at Leiden University.
