Description:
The Graduate School for East and Southeast European Studies invites
applications for 5 Doctoral Positions (according to the German TV-L) and 5 PhD Scholarships, available from November 15, 2013, for two years with the option of extension for eighteen months. The Graduate School is a cooperative venture organized by LMU Munich and University of Regensburg, funded by the DFG as part of the German Excellence Initiative.

Research is conducted in three broad, interdisciplinary fields: Origins and
Forms of Social and Political Change, Cultural Systems, Infrastructure,
Migration and Transfer of Knowledge. Research at the Graduate School focuses on interrelations and interdependencies between East and Southeast Europe and other regions of the World. Interest in interdisciplinary research questions
and sensitivity for transnational and spatial perspectives are expected. The
Graduate School draws on the following disciplines: History, literary and
language studies, art history, theater studies, political sciences and law. In
the context of cross regional comparisons and transfer studies the School's expertise in area studies is complemented by Chinese, Japanese and North American studies.

The doctoral positions are available for a period of two years with the option
of extension for another eighteen months. Remuneration is based on Grade E 13 TV-L (65%) of the German Public Service Salary Scale. The teaching obligation amounts to one SPW. PhD Scholarships are awarded for two years with the option of extension for another eighteen months. A monthly stipend of 1.365 Euro is provided, plus travel funds, grants for material costs as well as child care expenses in accordance with DFG guidelines where applicable. The holders of both the doctoral positions and the scholarships will be expected to conduct an independent research project, which contributes to the graduate school's fields of research. Participation in the seminars and qualification program is

Requirements:
Very good graduate degree (Master's, Magister, German diploma, state
examination or equivalent degree), independent research project within the
fields of interest to the Graduate School, interest in interdisciplinary
research questions and sensitivity for transnational and spatial perspectives,
knowledge of German and English, knowledge of a third language, resumé and references, research proposal of 4 to 6 pages, work plan and time schedule, Curriculum Vitae, certificate of eligibility for admission to university and degree certificates, abstract of the Master's thesis, list of publications if
applicable, references by two university professors. Please submit the

Evaluation:
PhD candidates are chosen on merit, based on criteria such as the originality
of the research project and feasibility of the work plan, the scientific
potential of the applicant and her/his previous academic achievements, ability to cooperate within the context of the Graduate School, and willingness to contribute to theoretical and methodological questions. Eligible candidates will be invited to Munich on October 7, 2013, for an interview with the two speakers of the Graduate School, the Admission Committee and their prospective advisors.
