Interaction and actuation of lipid mebranes with magnetic nanoparticles

Two PhD students in physics, chemistry or materials science

The Institute for Biologically inspired materials is looking for candidates to 2 PhD student positions in an ERC funded project to study the interaction of nanoparticles with model lipid and cell membranes. The research projects will build on the expertise of our research group in the synthesis and surface modification of superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles, and in the assembly and study of lipid membranes and nanoparticles at liquid interfaces respectively.
Your tasks will be to develop new methodology to track and study the organization of nanoparticles within lipid membranes. You will also stuy the magnetic actuation of NP-doped artificial membranes and real cells. We expect the research to lead to interesting applications in areas such as smart materials, cell manipulation and drug delivery. 
At your disposal are the state-of-the-art labs of the Department of Nanobiotechnology, including TEM, SEM, confocal microscopy, surface sensitive real-time techniques, its synthetic chemistry and cell culture facilities. Your colleagues come from the disciplines of chemistry, physics, biology and biotechnology.
The salary is set at a competitive European level. PhD positions run for 3 years. We expect candidates to be able to begin their thesis work at the beginning of 2014.
Your profile should contain a university degree in physics, chemistry, materials science or equivalent study. You should have an interest in and be familiar with the methods of colloid and soft matter science. Your application should contain:

  • Diploma for highest finished degree (expected date of graduation if the degree is not yet finished)
  • Full transcript of grades for your university studies (with grade key in English)
  • List of minimum 2 reference persons with contact information (optional: already obtained reference letters)
Make sure that you submit all relevant documents or your application might not be considered. You might be additionally asked to provide a TOEFL test. At least one PhD position will be awarded to a female candidate. The application should be in English.
A large number of applicants is expected. It might therefore take time before you receive a reply to your application.  Submit your application before 30.09.2013 to be sure to be evaluated in the first round. Selected applicants will be invited for interviews. Final candidates will be selected before end of 2013.
