The Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg and the Jade University of Applied Sciences in cooperation with OFFIS offer
15 Scholarships for PhD Candidates
in the PhD Program
SAMS â€" Safe Automation of Maritime Systems

funded by the State of Lower Saxony. This program joins the research at the University of Oldenburg and the research institute OFFIS in safety critical systems and information processing with the expertise of the Jade University of Applied Science in automation in navigation, ship handling and geographical information systems. They are available starting October 1, 2014 until September 2015 for a duration of maximal three years.
SAMS addresses research in safe automation in maritime systems for navigation, safe ship handling, marine/maritime sensor systems and sensor data processing, simulation for safety assessment and human centered design including cognitive modelling. 
SAMS offers:
  • 1500 € per month plus support for publication and international travel;
  • scholarships enabling the doctoral students to concentrate on their PhD projects;
  • a cooperative and supportive research environment;
  • supervision by two expert professors and by OFFIS researchers;
  • support for traveling and conferences;
  • international exchange;
  • a full spectrum of opportunities for knowledge acquisition;
  • a three year scheduled program to finish the PhD thesis
  • support for equal opportunities in science.
Successful applicants for the research program should have an excellent Master's degree or equivalent in Maritime Science, Nautics, Engineering, Computer Science or a closely related discipline, fluency in English, and an interest in exploring new notions of e-Navigation. We expect a background in system engineering, automation, navigation, simulation, geoinformation or human centered design. Qualified candidates who have not yet completed their master are also encouraged to apply.
We invite applications with a CV, a detailed statement of interest in SAMS, transcripts of the records summarizing the candidate's academic performance, and names of two references in pdf format to sams@uni-oldenburg.de.
For the scholarship, starting at the 1st of October, applications are expected to be submitted until 15th of August 2014. SAMS seeks to increase the proportion of women in science. Disabled persons with equal qualifications will be given preference.
