LA TROBE UNIVERSITY      Melbourne, Australia  â?¨Department of Computer Science and Computer Engineering  â?¨3-Year PhD Scholarship in Sensing, Real-Time Analytics and Activity Recognition for Urban Transportation Safety and Efficiency      â?¨We would like to invite candidates to apply for a PhD programme, on a project jointly supported by Xerox Research Center India, CSIRO, and La Trobe University. This exciting programme will provide an opportunity to develop new techniques and models that will take advantage of modern mobile and environmental sensing capabilities to improve urban (e.g., transportation) safety and efficiency, while preserving the privacy of users.   The future will see an increasing proportion of the worldâ?Ts population living in complex urban environments. Sensors on mobile devices and the environment enable the physical activities and movements of users to be tracked in real-time, enabling contextualised smart services to be provided as needed as well as increased awareness of activities in the vicinity of users. Such information can be used to solve transportation and daily life issuesâ?¨such as finding areas with potential carparks, finding cafes with short queues, improving safety by warning vehicles of impending pedestrian movements and helping someone opportunistically avoid quiet unsafe places on the way home.      The scholarship will enable the candidate to study problems and address challenges in solving important urban issues, e.g., relating to urban safety and transportation efficiencies, and to make a contribution to particular problems faced by society today.   â?¨Applicants should have strong qualifications at undergraduate and/or masterâ?Ts level, namely, strong qualificationsâ?¨in computer science and/or computer systems engineering, software development skills in C, C++, Java, and programming with Android-operated devices.  â?¨For more details, or to ask questions, or to learn how to apply, please contact Associate Professor Seng Loke, s.loke@latrobe.edu.au,â?¨or Professor Wenny Rahayu, w.rahayu@latrobe.edu.au.  â?¨The application deadline is 21 August 2014.Â
