Two PhD positions in Computer Science       The Faculty of Informatics of the University of Lugano (USI), Switzerland, is looking for candidates for two fully funded PhD positions, available for 3 years (starting 1 October 2014 or as soon as possible thereof), in connection with two projects funded by the EU and the SNSF.      *The Projects*  -------------  RECALL aims to rethink and redefine the notion of memory augmentation. Recent developments in capture technology and information retrieval allow for continuous and automated recordings of many aspects of our everyday lives. RECALL will harness these trends and develop a new paradigm for memory augmentation technologies that are technically feasible, desired by users, and beneficial to society. RECALL will build on contemporary memory theories that highlight how technology augmented recall can be used to both re-enforce and attenuate memories. It will develop novel capture technologies and corresponding control mechanisms to automate the acquisition of personal memories, and investigate how feedback through ambient large displays and personal mobile devices can aid personal memory acquisition, retention, and attenuation.      MOBIR is related to mobile Information Retrieval (IR) (i.e. IR from mobile devices like mobile phones or pads) and aims at better estimating relevance in a mobile and context-aware environment. Context-aware mobile IR systems are able to estimate the relevance of a given page in relation to several different aspects. The most obvious aspect is topical relevance for which there is already a long history of research in IR. However, other types of relevance play a very important role in mobile IR,  for example geographic, temporal or opinion relevance. While a few attempts have been carried out to try to estimate some of these relevance criteria in the context of mobile IR, very little work has been done in trying to combine them. This proposal addresses the problem of combining relevance criteria for mobile IR, in order to determine the effective overall relevance of a document to a user information need. The results of this project will have considerable   impact in the area of!    mobile IR, both theoretically (through the development of new models of mobile IR) and practically (thanks to our collaboration with a major mobile search engine).      *The positions*  ---------------  Both positions will be in the area of Information Retrieval and Data Mining. You will research new methods and tools for the identification of personal contextual information useful for triggering queries in relation to the contextual factors. Your main responsibility will be to carry out research in one of the above areas, but you will be given the opportunity to acquire some teaching experience and qualification as well. The work will be supervised by Prof. Fabio Crestani.      *Our offer*  -----------  We offer a two full-time PhD positions with a competitive salary and social security insurances.  The year salary of a PhD student, in accordance with Swiss regulations, ranges from approx CHF 42,000 (gross) in the first year to approx CHF 48,000 (gross) in the last year.
