Ph.D. position in Physical Geography within the topic "Simulation of the Cordilleran Ice Sheet through a glacial cycle" at the Department of Physical Geography and Quaternary Geology. Reference number SU 463-74-09. Deadline for application: October 10, 2009.

The Department of Physical Geography and Quaternary Geology is one of the major departments within the Faculty of Science at Stockholm University. The department has 120 employees and approximately 1500 students. The main research disciplines are Geomorphology, Glaciology, Climatology, Quaternary Geology, Hydrology, Remote Sensing, Geographical Data Processing, Ecological Geography and Tropical Geography. Teaching is oriented towards geography, earth sciences, geosciences and environmental protection.

We seek a motivated geoscientist with strong quantitative and GIS skills to participate in a Swedish Research Council-funded project which investigates the history of the Cordilleran Ice Sheet through integration of field studies with numerical modelling. This project is being undertaken as a collaboration between researchers from the Department of Physical Geography and Quaternary Geology, Stockholm University (www.ink.su.se), and the Institute of Geography and Earth Sciences, Aberystwyth University, UK (www.ies.aber.ac.uk/en). The successful candidate will foremost employ numerical modelling techniques to study conditions of the former glaciation in western Canada. The candidate should be familiar with the handling of geomorphological data and digital terrain models in a GIS. As part of their studies they will further connect to glacial isostatic data, cosmogenic isotope evidence for glacial extent and subglacial conditions, and they will be expected to design and implement new modelling routines to optimize model output.

The successful candidate is expected to take up her/his position at Stockholm University before or in January 2010. As part of her/his education at Stockholm University, and to take full advantage of the international team approach used in this work, the successful candidate will be expected to spend considerable time at Aberystwyth University working with Dr. Alun Hubbard on the employed ice sheet model. During this time it is expected that the candidate will take a number of relevant postgraduate glaciology courses and potentially enroll in the MSc in Glaciology course, which will provide the candidate with an excellent basis from which to continue her/his PhD work at Stockholm University. The expected educational structure will be as follows: One semester at Stockholm University (spring 2010), including coursework; up to three semesters at Aberystwyth University (fall 2010 and all of 2011), and up to three years (2012–2014) for completion of PhD dissertation work at Stockholm University under the supervision of Prof. Arjen Stroeven and Dr. Nina Kirchner, with an expected date of PhD thesis defence during the spring of 2014. All degrees will involve publication of research results in internationally respected journals, and, if studies at Aberystwyth University are pursued towards a Masters' degree, the PhD dissertation will build upon work completed for this degree. Envisioned starting date at Stockholm University is January 1, 2010 (although this can be negotiated).

Application

Applications should include a letter of intent, curriculum vitae, copies of degree certificates and transcripts of academic records (all attested), a list of two persons who may act as references (with phone numbers and email addresses), and one copy of the applicant's undergraduate thesis and articles of which she or he is a co-author.

For further information contact someone from the supervisor team:
