Dear All, The Security Research group (http://securitylab.disi.unitn.it/) invites applications for two PhD positions in Systems Security and Malware Detection. In recent years the group has carried on research in the area of malware detection and vulnerability analysis. In particular, we are investigating these issues in specific domains that are: mobile systems and critical infrastructures. This thread of research has been recently consolidated by a couple of joint initiatives that are two joint cyber security labs with Poste Italiane and the National Research Council (CNR). In this context, we are looking for two highly motivated phd applicants with a strong background in operating system and networks, good programming skills and natural interest in "hacking a systems". Previous experiences in CTF-alike competitions or reverse engineering challenges are surely a plus. The main requirement for a successful PhD is however the passion for research. In particular, one candidate will focus his research mainly on new attack vectors and malware detection for cyber-physical and mobile systems. The other one on new approaches for anomalous-based detection. New PhD students will be part of the group as such they can benefit and they will contribute to the research activities of the whole group. Furthermore, they have the opportunity to supervise MSc students for small, research-focused project. They will have also the opportunity to participate to summer schools and possibly to external internships. THE SECURITY RESEARCH GROUP AT UNITN: Research and Teaching in Security, Privacy and Cryptography have been active at the University of Trento for many years. Our activities span from classical IT security (mobile systems, cloud, networks, protocols, access control, etc), to organizational security (Air Traffic Management, critical infrastructures, etc.) and military security (mostly cryptographic applications). Our focus is applied security and most of our funding comes through research grants and collaborative projects with industry. Periodically, we keep seminars and public workshops open to visitors from local research centers, companies, and other organizations. Recently, we opened a joint cyber security lab with the National Research Council and a Research Lab with Poste Italiane. Our research topics cover two main important directions: technological research where we develop particular security technologies such as malware detection, access control and security policy enforcement, mobile platform and app security and privacy; empirical research where we experiment how technologies do actually work in practice such as which vulnerabilities are actually exploited in the wild, how malware markets looks like. Research topics typically span several years, or projects, and possibly involve more students and activities. The language of the research group is English. THE DEPARTMENT: The Department of Information Engineering and Computer Science (DISI) is a leading and fast-growing research institution, characterized by a young and international faculty and by a large, international student population. Indicators for scientific production place the department among the top in Europe. The department and the PhD school closely collaborate with - and operate in - a fertile and rapidly growing research and innovation environment characterized by top class research centers and an increasing number of industrial research labs. LIVING IN TRENTO: The University guarantees accommodation in its Campus to all students for at least one year. Trento is a vibrant city with a beautifully preserved historic center, consistently ranked among the best cities for quality of life in Italy. It's a multicultural city where many locals can speak English. It offers a variety of cultural and sports opportunities all year around, as well as excellent food. Trento is located very close to the Alps so there are plenty of opportunities for skiing an trekking. More information can be found here: http://international.unitn.it/international/students-life APPLICATION: Applications must be filed online before June 16, 2014 (at 16:00, Italy time) at the link below. IMPORTANT: The application procedure is not straightforward. It's important to have the translations as required by the instructions. During the filling of the application online, in the section "Disciplinary sector/s and research area/s of interest" indicate "Security" It is strongly advised to get in contact with Prof. Bruno Crispo (crispo@disi.unitn.it) before submitting the application, by providing a curriculum vitae including two references.
