1. University and Department The position will be in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science of the University of Missouri, St. Louis (UMSL). UMSL is one of four universities in the University of Missouri System. It is a research university established in 1963, and the newest university in the UM System. At the present time, the department has 25 full-time faculty members and 9 graduate teaching assistants. The department offers Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Mathematics and Computer Science and Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics with an option in Computer Science. More detailed information about the department can be found at http://www.umsl.edu/mathcs/index.html 2. Research Areas a) Mobile and cloud computing architecture design and evaluation. Network Function Virtualization (NFV), Software Defined Networking (SDN), service delivery in cloud and multi-cloud environments, synergy of "core" and "edge" clouds for the future "Internet of Things" applications. b) Cloud computing security. Architecture-level security designs for cloud computing using NFV and SDN, novel methods in validating and evaluating these designs and protocols on open source platforms such as OpenStack, Open Floodlight, and Open vSwitch. 3. Requirements a) Excellent backgrounds and knowledge in networking and security b) Excellent research capability, research potentials and enthusiasm c) Self-motivated and strong problem-solving ability d) Strong previous research experience and publications preferred e) Excellent academic records and ranking preferred 4. Financial Assistance Full tuition waiver and monthly stipend in form of Teaching Assistant (TA) or Research Assistant (RA). After passing qualification exam, the stipend will be raised. Note that the living cost in St. Louis is low and it is relatively easier to survive with the stipend comparing with other big cities in U.S. 5. Start Time It could be Spring 2015, or Fall 2015. Fall 2014 is also possible depending on the speed of the visa and other paper work. We will see. 6. Advisor Information Dr. Jianli Pan has graduated from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering of Washington University in St. Louis. In Fall 2014, he will start as a tenure-track assistant professor in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at UMSL.
