The interconnected European high voltage transmission system has been built through the progressive interconnection of national grids. Due to transitional targets towards sustainable economies by means of large scale incorporation of renewable energy based generation sources, the system will undergo significant structural and topological changes, in which power electronic based technologies, such as, for instance, voltage-sourced converter high-voltage direct current (HVDC-VSC) multi-terminal transmission links will be increasingly used. One major plan on the table is the construction of an offshore network in the North Sea, which will likely be HVDC-based. COBRAcable is a new HVDC-VSC link between Denmark and the Netherlands, which will be designed for operating as a multiterminal link later in time and be part of an offshore HVDC network.
The positions are within the Intelligent Electrical Power Grids (IEPG) section of the Department of Electrical Sustainable Energy, Faculty of EEMCS. The IEPG section is seeking a PhD student and a Postdoctoral Fellow to work on operational planning and control challenges of the COBRAcable towards a highly reliable, secure, and flexible multi-terminal HVDC-VSC link. The 4-year PhD studentship a d 1-year Postdoc Fellowship, starting on 20th January 2015, offer a great opportunity for participating in a cutting-edge research project involving strong academia-industry collaboration between Aalborg University, Delft University of Technology, Energinet.dk (Danish TSO) and TenneT (Dutch TSO).
Requirements for PhD candidate
· MSc degree in Electrical Engineering or Power Systems or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to the master's degree;
· Strong background on power system stability and control;
· Knowledge of modelling and control of HVDC systems;
· Ability to work in a project team and take responsibility for own research goals;
· Proficiency in English for effective communication and writing.
Requirements for Postdoc fellow
· PhD degree in Electrical Engineering or Power Systems or closely related fields.
· Strong background on power system stability and control.
· Strong background on modelling and control of HVDC systems
