The IBM Research Smarter Cities Technology Centre in Dublin is looking for top PhD students interested in all areas of data mining and machine learning, statistical modelling & optimisation, control and decision systems, social, semantic web, geospatial analysis and visualisation, including: Large-scale data analysis and mining for city-scale traffic, water, and energy networks Online and offline control mechanisms for city-scale traffic, water, and energy networks Machine learning techniques to learn traffic patterns and to predict future events (such as bus arrival times) Anomaly detection in infrastructural networks and development of mitigation strategies to improve the quality of service Social Media and Web 2.0 analytics Capturing, representing, exploiting social media and crowd-sourced information Enabling users and developers to easily leverage linked open data as an information source Collaborative, end-user-driven knowledge enrichment Our internship program provides students with a unique opportunity to experience the research environment here at IBM. The program is highly competitive, and is designed for top students who are interested in tackling challenging research problems. Many of our student interns have authored papers, or even thesis, out of their sojourn with us; have contributed to open source projects; and/or have contributed to IBM products. The Smarter Cities Technology Centre is part of IBM Research and was created to take on the challenges of our increasingly urbanised world. We are an R&D organization that works closely with city authorities, universities, and small/large businesses to advance science & technology for smarter urban and environmental systems. Areas we currently focus on include: data mining and machine learning; statistical modelling & optimisation, control and decision systems, social, semantic web; distributed information systems; knowledge & data engineering, geospatial analysis and visualisation, simulation, real-time computing, and urban and environmental systems, e.g., water, energy, transportation.
