Recruitment Standards

A minimum standard of quality (A- in the last two years) is considered. Exceptions will only be made for candidates with other outstanding qualifications or justification. We do not accept students if their interests and project do not match the TOSST program objectives or if the statement of interest is unconvincing. The TOSST program considers applicants with educational backgrounds in physical, chemical, biological and geological sciences, marine technology and marine management.

We strongly encourage student candidates who have already received financial support from external sources to apply to TOSST. This guideline extends to students who are already attending university, but who have not yet started or defined their project (i.e. generally, those who are within their 1st year) and those already in the program. Incentives will be offered to students (or supervisors) who raise their own external financial support (e.g., either higher stipend and/or some additional travel support).

Requirements for Admission

Applications are not reviewed by the graduate committee until all materials have been submitted.

  • 1-3 page statement of interest specifically for TOSST (critical component of the application).

  • 2 letters of recommendation from academic referees (all recommendation letters will be verified and sent by the referee).

  • Unofficial copies of academic transcripts (transcripts must be in English).

  • Resume or Curriculum Vitae.

  • If applicable, TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language), MELAB or IELTS scores.

  • If applicable, the abstract from a previously completed thesis and/or copies of papers published or in preparation.

  • If applicable, results of the Graduate Record Exam.

  • A list of awarded fellowships or those in which you're eligible.

Please refer to Step 2 on how and when to send the application materials to TOSST.

Application Process

Step 1: Identify a Supervisor (this includes any collaborator)

As a potential candidate of the TOSST program, it's important that we match your interests with the expertise available at Dalhousie, and at Kiel University/GEOMAR. The first step in applying to the TOSST program is to determine your area of interest and identify potential supervisor(s).  You will find a list of participating scientists and collaborators under our 'People' tab and their area of interest. Email the faculty supervisor(s) your curriculum vitae (résumé) and a copy of your transcripts (unofficial is okay) and mention your interest in the TOSST program.  Please copy the TOSST program coordinator on your initial correspondence with the faculty supervisor(s).

Step 2: Apply to TOSST

Once you have identified a supervisor and he/she has agreed to put your name forward as a TOSST applicant, your research supervisor can now nominate you as a TOSST participant, and you may apply to the TOSST research school. The nomination is a two-part application process. The student completes the first part of the application, and the supervisor completes the second part. When the two parts are completed, the supervisor then forwards the completed nomination form, along with an electronic copy of the nominee's complete application file (see requirements for admission for a list of materials needed), plus any additional documents required to fulfill the TOSST requirements for admission. These documents must be sent in one email to the TOSST graduate committee for consideration of acceptance into the TOSST program.

IMPORTANT: Send all application materials to tosst@dal.ca, with the appropriate subject line, 'TOSST PhD Fellowship Opportunity', or for a Master's application, 'TOSST MSc Fellowship Opportunity'.

Only electronic copies sent by a supervisor are accepted. The application can be found in a pdf or word file here:

Step 3: Apply to Dalhousie University

If accepted into the TOSST program, you will be notified immediately and encouraged to apply to Dalhousie University, unless you are currently attending the university (i.e. undergraduate studies).  This is the final step in the application process. The nominee must apply and be accepted into the Dalhousie University Faculty of Graduate Studies (MSc or PhD). For application procedures in your department of interest, please contact their administrators for questions or concerns (i.e. Biology, Chemistry, Oceanography, etc.), as each department as different admission requirements.

IMPORTANT: Please be aware that acceptance into the TOSST program does not guarantee acceptance into the Dalhousie University Faculty of Graduate Studies. The TOSST research school is a unique and specialized program within the university, and has a different set of requirements and standards for admission than those of the university.
