The Technical Support Unit (TSU) of the IPCCfs Task Force on National Greenhouse Gas Inventories (TFI) is re-launching its Internship Programme.
The aim of the TFI is the production of guidelines for the estimation of national emissions and removals of greenhouse gases for use by Parties to the UNFCCC and the encouragement and support to inventory compilers using these guidelines. The 2006 Guidelines for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories consolidate, update and revise all the previous IPCC Inventory Guidance. The TFI has a number of activities to support users of the Guidelines including the IPCC Emission Factor Database (EFDB). This is a library of emission factors and other parameters that can be used by inventory compilers to make better estimates of their emissions or removals of greenhouse gases by more closely reflecting national circumstances.
The Inventory Internship Programme aims to provide young scientists opportunities to familiarise with the IPCC work on methodologies for national greenhouse gas inventories as well as to contribute to the work of TSU through applied studies in relevant inventory-related science.
Further objectives are:
To support national inventory activities, in particular those of developing and EIT countries, through dissemination of the IPCC methodologies for GHG Inventories.
To identify and fill gaps in the science/data/information with a view towards contributing to the future revision of the IPCC Guidelines.
To broaden a network of inventory experts that will be a great asset to the IPCC TFI.
In order to assist inventory developers the TFI is focussing on activities that support inventory development. One of these activities is the EFDB. The EFDB aims to be a library of emission factors and other parameters needed for inventory development that, potentially, may be appropriate to countries national circumstances. Data is submitted to and reviewed by the EFDB Editorial Board. The Editorial Board does not completely review the data but checks that it is robust (has the data been validated in some way and is the data likely to be reasonably accurate for its category) and applicable by users (the references enable users to determine when and where the data can be used) and well documented. It remains the responsibility of the users of the EFDB to ensure the data is appropriate to their inventory. One aim of the current call for interns will be to assist programme officers in the development of the EFDB.
The participant of the TSU Inventory Internship Programme shall be an expert with a background related to GHG inventories, who:
Has a master or equivalent degree relevant to the work,
Is in a health condition that would not hinder research activities, and
Has a good command of English.
Applicants are requested to prepare a short research proposal that they would work on while working with the TSU. This proposal should examine a specific area of the inventory from either a national or regional perspective and could aim to, for example, improve national or regional inventories, explore the range of possible emissions from a sector in differing circumstances or review nationally specific emission factors and parameters. The proposals will be reviewed in terms of practicability, applicability to developing countries and potential to contribute to the EFDB.
The internship programme:
Internships will last for a period of 6 months
There are two positions
Interns will be based with the TSU at its host organisation IGES, in Hayama, Japan
Interns will receive an allowance of 150,000 yen, taxable, 20% of tax charged as non-residence. Another 150,000 yen is provided as living expenses which is non-taxable. Accommodation nearby at a cost of 50,000 yen per month.
