Description of the scheme

General

The Irish Research Council for Science, Engineering and Technology (IRCSET) `EMBARK' Initiative offers opportunities for suitably qualified individuals to pursue a postgraduate degree by research. The Scheme supports basic research in the broad areas of Science, Engineering and Technology.

The online application system opens on 13th of January 2010 for individuals hoping to begin postgraduate research in the Republic of Ireland in 2010. Individuals awarded under the scheme must maintain their principle residence in Ireland during the term of the Scholarship and Scholarships must be held at a recognised third-level institution in Ireland.

While a majority of postgraduate Scholarships awarded by the Council are offered to European Union (EU) citizens or to those who are ordinarily resident within a member state of the EU, a proportion of awards are also offered to exceptional candidates who are ordinarily resident in non EU member states.

Scholarships are awarded only to those who will be full-time individuals and who will engage full-time in research during the period of the award.

Applications for funding under the scheme are accepted by an online electronic application system available at our website www.ircset.ie from the 13th of January, 2010. The deadline for applicants to submit applications is 5.00 pm (GMT/UTC) on the 10th February 2010.

Who should apply?

B.Sc., M.Sc., or Ph.D. students in Computer Science or Physics, interested in working on cutting edge technology projects for two months during the period June-September 2010, with the possibility of follow-on projects in their home institutes.

How to join?

Candidates for the CERN openlab Student Programme are normally proposed by University supervisors. The student's CV, a recommendation by the supervisor, and an indication of the preferred area of work should be sent to sverre (dot) jarp (at) cern (dot) ch by 31st March 2010.

Confirmation of student placement will be made to supervisors shortly thereafter.

Stipend

The stipend for a two-month study is CHF5000 for travel, accommodation and per diem, normally sponsored 50% by the student's home institute or university and 50% by CERN and the CERN openlab industrial partners of CERN. Students must have their own health insurance.

Student projects

Several projects and groups at CERN participate in the openlab student programme, including the WLCG (Worldwide LHC Computing Grid). Examples of projects that students undertook in 2009 include:

- Studies of software performance using multithreading
- Autovectorisation by compilers
- Integration of database virtualisation solutions
- Grid job monitoring
- Development of a security monitoring tool
- Visualisation of network monitoring data

Job description

PhD researchers participate in the Maastricht University Graduate School of Law PhD Training program, starting September 2010. They will prepare a PhD thesis within one of the core research programmes of the Ius Commune or the Human Rights Research School. Supervision will be provided by individually assigned senior researchers. At least 80 % of the position will be dedicated to research and not more than 20% to teaching activities. PhD researchers join the faculty department in the field linked to the theme of their research proposal.

Research projects are incorporated in faculty research groups, which are all part of one of the research programmes of the inter-university research schools Ius Commune and Human Rights. Ius Commune research responds to the increasing need for comparative law and the Europeanization and internationalization of the law. It focuses on European private law (contracts, tort, civil procedure, property, family law, corporate law); comparative constitutional and administrative law, European law (institutions and substantive), international economic law and intellectual property law. Within the domain of Human Rights the focus is on globalisation and human rights and on criminal law in an international context. University graduated Masters with relevant degrees and excellent grades. MI Lab (Medical Imaging Laboratory for Innovative Future Healthcare) is an inter-disciplinary research centre integrating industry, hospital and university. The overall goal is to facilitate better health care and improved patient treatment through research and innovation in medical imaging.

MI Lab is located in Trondheim, Norway, in the fully integrated university hospital, St. Olavs Hospital. Its main success factor is creating an environment of close daily collaboration between medical doctors and technology researchers. At present the multi-disciplinary research team includes PhD students and post doctors with the following backgrounds:

The PhD positions will have different tasks in the areas of ultrasound technology, including acoustics, probe design, electronics, signal processing and image/video analysis. Also clinical research projects in applications of a new pocket-sized ultrasound scanner, and heart and brain imaging with MR and Ultrasound are available.

We will to some extent tailor each PhD project to the candidates special competence and interests.

Master students in their last year are also encouraged to apply.
These applicants will be evaluated on the same line as other applicants, but may only start a PhD fellowship after finished Masters's degree.

MI Lab and NTNU want to attract outstanding and creative candidates who can contribute to our ongoing research activities.

In the evaluation the main criteria will be:

the academic quality of the applicant
the ability to work in an interdisciplinary research team
personal creativity and innovation
the candidate's motivation for the position
Qualificaions and practical information:

For a PhD position a Master's degree or equivalent is required with at least 5 years of studies and an average grade of A or B within a scale of A-E for passing grades (A best).
Applicants must also be able to communicate fluently in English (spoken and written).

Selected applicants will be invited to undergo an interview. If none of the applicants holds up to the high standards of MI Lab, it may be decided not to hire any of the applicants.

The duration of a PhD fellowship is 3 years.

A yearly amount for operating costs will be added.
